Last year, Kayla made the big decision to move from Chicago to San Francisco, Californ-i-a. Family and close friends had already heard, but Kayla knew an April Fool’s Day opportunity when she saw one:

Since I’m devious I relished the idea that some of my friends might think was fake.

As always, it’s hard to keep a fake-story-that’s-actually-true afloat for long.

In retrospect, I really should have milked that more.

What I am really looking forward to are my Timehop emails from May 11-13 last year, when I made the 2,200+ mile drive out to San Francisco. My best friend and I live tweeted/Facebooked our cross-country drive (including freak snowstorms, brewery tours, and truck stops we saw along the way with the hashtag #westwardhoes.

Hail the Canadian Hero

A year ago, Andrew interviewed Rick Mercer, a comedic icon in Canada, at the University of Northern British Columbia. (We hear he’s big in….Canada!)

Andrew wrote a whole blog post about this day! For us Americans who may not be up to date on the latest in Canadian comedy…

When it comes to Canadian celebrities, you don’t get much bigger than Rick Mercer.

Not even Celine Dion? :(

I was actually surprised by this– I know he still has his show, but I though his fan base was mostly limited to people who remembered his 22 Minutes/Talking to Americans Day. Boy, was I wrong.

A whole day, just for talking to Americans! We knew they loved us.

We asked Andrew some good old-fashioned interview questions about his own interview with Rick Mercer. Just imagine these words coming out of a tinny radio.

1. How was interviewing Rick Mercer?

Kind of surreal. He saw the CBC [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation] logo and said “here comes trouble”, I’m assuming because he works for CBC too— just nationally, and for TV. Weird that we’re in the same organization.

2. Remember any good jokes he told?

He was full of one-liners, but what struck me with this event was how seriously he took the project (raising money for anti-malaria campaigns in Africa).

3. Did you get to ride in the helicopter?

Heck, no. Those things are expensive.

4. Have you been back to UNBC since?

Oh, yeah, all the time. I’m alumni and I have a second job up there. It’s a great place to be.

Letting the Cat into the Bag

Some cats play the piano. Some cats wear hats. And some cats are like Gladys. According to Jennifer:

Oddly enough she’s a bit of a bitch unless she’s in a basket or wearing a dress. Weird right?

We don’t judge.

My sister (@moranfo) was working at a liquor store and it was her last day on the job before she started as a marketing associate in corporate America. I figured it would be a funny joke and totally make her day.

Of course! A cat in a liquor store. What could go wrong?

So I put Gladys in one of her baskets and dress and drove to the store.

Then I realized I had to get her in the store, which is how she ended up in the purse. She was totally fine with this, oddly enough. Needless to say my sister totally loved it – and it was a great last day before joining the big world of cubicles and whiteboards.

To this day, Gladys still enjoys putting on a dress and driving by the ocean or picking up a latte at Starbucks.

Gladys seems like one cool cat. She might need to go easy on the Smirnoff, though.

Garden State of Mind

Byron was a Knicks fan before it was cool. Last year, he posted that photo on Foursquare with the caption:

“Courtside at The Garden. This is where it’s at! LET’S GO KNICKS!!!”

One year later:

I’ve been to the garden a couple of times so far this season. I’m a TWC subscriber and I’ve been blacked out of their games on TV because of contract negotiations between TWC & MSG Network so I’ve had to follow them on the radio or at a sports bar.

On Jeremy Lin:

The emergence of Jeremy Lin has been amazing. His play (and the rest of the team) really has the city excited about the Knicks for the first time in quite a while.

A Lunchtime Tradition

In December 2010, Cosmo took a new job. He asked his new bosses if it was OK to take a longer lunch and go for a bike ride. Here’s what he said:

“Despite the fact that last winter was a very different animal from what we’ve seen this year (note the depth of the snowbanks in the photo), last February 17 was sunny and unseasonably warm, so I made my first request to take a long lunch break and ride. My bosses approved and I snapped this photo about 16 miles in (there’s a GPS of the route here). It’s in Westhampton MA, just past the Northampton town line, and at the foot of a rather unpleasant climb.

“Since then, mid-day rides have been a fairly regular feature of my workday. For better or worse, this winter’s weather has been a lot more cooperative, and I did manage to celebrate the anniversary this afternoon (albeit taking a different route) — my third such escape this week.”
